Before a single page is designed, you need to choose the platform your website will run on. The choice affects your cost, speed, flexibility and how easily you can manage the site yourself. Here is how the three most common options compare.
The quick answer
- Choose WordPress for a business website, blog or service website that you want to update easily.
- Choose Shopify if your main goal is selling products online with minimal technical work.
- Choose custom PHP or Laravel when you need special features or a dashboard that ready-made tools cannot provide.
Side-by-side comparison
| Platform | Best for | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress | Business sites, blogs, service companies | Easy to edit, huge choice of themes and plugins, strong for SEO and content | Needs regular updates and good hosting. Too many plugins can slow it down |
| Shopify | Online stores | Payments, inventory and checkout built in. Secure and hosted for you | Monthly fees and app costs. Less freedom for unusual designs |
| Custom PHP / Laravel | Platforms with special logic or an admin panel | Built exactly for you, fast, flexible and scalable | Higher build effort. You depend on a developer for changes |
When WordPress is the right choice
WordPress powers a large share of the web because it is flexible and friendly for non-technical owners. You can change text, add pages and publish blog posts without a developer. It is also a good base for SEO, since you control titles, URLs and content structure. For most local businesses and service companies, WordPress with a custom or well-built theme is the safest choice.
When Shopify is the right choice
If you sell products and want to be live quickly, Shopify removes most of the hard parts: checkout, payments, shipping options and security. It suits clothing, jewellery, beauty and other product brands. If you already use WordPress and want a store, WooCommerce is a similar option with more control but more maintenance.
When you need custom PHP or Laravel
Custom development makes sense when your idea does not fit a ready-made tool. Examples include a booking platform, a school or clinic management panel, a property listing portal, or a dashboard where staff and customers log in. A custom build includes an admin panel designed around your own workflow.
How to decide in five questions
- Do I mainly sell products, or do I mainly give information and collect enquiries?
- Who will update the website, and how often?
- Do I need features that are not available as a plugin or app?
- What is my budget now, and what will I need in two years?
- How important are speed and search ranking for my business?
