Not long ago, "getting found online" meant ranking on page one of Google. Today your next customer might ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, read an AI summary at the top of Google, or follow up with a question in AI Mode, and never scroll through a list of links at all. If your business is hard for these systems to find, understand and trust, you risk being left out of the answer. The good news is that winning here is far less mysterious than the hype suggests.

What has changed in search

Search is now a mix of classic results and AI-generated answers. Google shows AI Overviews at the top of many results and offers AI Mode for deeper follow-up questions, while tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions directly and link to their sources. People also type longer, more natural questions, such as "which company can build a fast online store for my business?", instead of two or three keywords.

Industry research points the same way. Semrush data reported by Exposure Ninja found that the share of commercial keywords triggering an AI Overview grew from about 8% in October 2024 to about 19% in October 2025. In a GoodFirms survey of marketers, 65% named AI-driven search changes as their biggest challenge. For business owners the effect is more "zero-click" searches, where the answer appears on the results page and fewer people visit a website, so it matters more than ever to be one of the sources that gets cited.

What Google actually says

Google's own guidance for site owners is refreshingly simple: there are no additional requirements and no special optimisation needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The same foundations apply, which are pages that can be crawled and indexed, helpful and reliable people-first content, and a good experience. Google also confirms that sites appearing in these features are included in your normal Search Console traffic.

Be careful with "secret tricks". Anyone selling guaranteed ChatGPT rankings or magic GEO hacks is selling hope. Nobody controls what an AI system chooses to cite. What you can control is how clear, useful and trustworthy your website is.

7 practical steps to be found in AI search

1. Answer real questions clearly

List the questions customers ask before they buy. Use each question as a heading and answer it in two or three plain sentences first, then add detail, examples and next steps. Clear, well-structured answers are easier for people and for AI systems to understand and quote.

2. Cover your topic completely

Instead of one thin page, build a set of connected pages: a main service page, supporting guides, pricing factors, comparisons and FAQs, all linked together. This is often called topical authority, and it shows that your website is a dependable source on the subject.

3. Show real experience and expertise

Name your authors, add real examples, photos, process details and results you can stand behind. Generic text that could appear on any website gives neither Google nor an AI tool a reason to prefer you.

4. Keep the technical foundations strong

Make sure important pages can be crawled and indexed, load quickly on mobile, use HTTPS, are linked from other pages and appear in an XML sitemap. Check that your robots.txt file does not accidentally block search crawlers you want to reach you.

5. Use structured data honestly

Add schema such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, Product and FAQ where it matches what visitors can actually see on the page. Schema helps machines understand your content, but it is not a switch that guarantees AI visibility.

6. Build your brand and reputation

AI answers lean on information that is consistent across the web. Keep your business name and contact details identical everywhere, complete your Google Business Profile, collect genuine reviews and earn mentions from trusted websites and directories in your industry.

7. Measure and adjust

Search Console includes traffic from AI features in your overall search data. Also check your analytics for visits from AI tools, watch whether more people search for your brand name, and test your most important customer questions in Google and AI assistants each month to see who is cited and why.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Publishing mass-produced AI text with no real expertise, review or original detail
  • Chasing every new acronym (GEO, AEO, LLMO) while the basics are still broken
  • Hiding key information in images, PDFs or scripts that are hard to read
  • Ignoring your Google Business Profile and customer reviews
  • Expecting overnight results from a strategy that compounds over months

A simple 30-day plan

  1. Week 1: Audit your top pages. Fix titles, headings, speed, mobile layout and any pages that cannot be crawled.
  2. Week 2: Write down your 10 most important customer questions and add clear answers to the right pages, plus an FAQ section.
  3. Week 3: Add accurate schema, strengthen internal links and complete your Google Business Profile.
  4. Week 4: Publish one in-depth guide, ask for genuine reviews, and set up monthly tracking in Search Console and analytics.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. Search engines still rely on the same fundamentals: helpful content, a technically healthy website and trust. AI features change how results are shown, but sites still need to be found, understood and trusted to be included.

What are GEO and AEO?

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) are names for making your content easy for AI tools to find, understand and cite. In practice they build on good SEO: clear answers, strong topical coverage, accurate structured data and a trusted brand.

Do I need special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode?

Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisation needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use structured data to describe your content accurately, and focus on content quality and technical health.

Can anyone guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

No. Nobody controls what AI systems choose to show. A fast, well-structured website with helpful content and a strong reputation simply gives you the best chance.
